Both caringly showed a relaxed attitude to formal religion. In a time of innocence they had a sense of humour about it. While the rosary was said now and again, my less than holy attitude to most of the RC practices were overlooked with laughter. There were no questions asked when I also declined to be an alter ‘boy’ or for that matter a scout. Sadly things didn’t go well in the end to say the very least. I carry many regrets into late middle age, but now and again see the light with a dose of Jungian sense sprinkled with that of Viktor E. Frankl It is a consolation to me that my parents and their friends had a deep faith. My parents did not visit this RC central basilica, but after I dropped into various churches around Europe, I made sure that they were remembered in St Mary’s pro-Cathedral in Dublin.
